Pyrex Reaction Kettle and Four-Neck Top
Top-quality Pyrex glassware. A new kettle and a possibly new four-neck top (see detailed descriptions below). This listing is is for one kettle, one top, and the kettle box only. The second photo was done in the fashion it was in order to show both surfaces of the top, and the first photo has a caption at the top to aid in clamp selection and demonstrate the flush fit of the two pieces.
This same 1st picture caption is also being shown to help with clamp selection (a clamp is not included). Referring to this caption, the height of the two rims joined together (vertical measurement) is about 13mm (a few mm in from the edge where the two surfaces begin to flatten out). On the kettle top, the glass is flat for ~6.5mm before it begins to angle. On the kettle itself, the glass is flat for ~11mm before it begins to angle.
The ground glass flange on the top is slightly wider than on the kettle (see boxes below). However, as far as top/kettle compatability, the two pieces have essentially identical diameters at the outer edges at their meeting point. The top piece does flair out very slightly as it goes up (see the upper caption on the first photo).
Note that due to the way the top of the kettle angles down to the sidewall, the entries of the outer three joints are partially "eclipsed" (approximately 1/3 of these joints' diameter is blocked, on the outer side, from accepting an object), so inserting something like a thermometer either may not work or may place it near the wall when one of those three joints is used (a well-centered thermometer should be fine).
Check all dimensions in the boxes below to ensure correct fitting with your heating source and joint accessories as there may have been a slight design shape change with these kettles since this one was manufactured. The flat area at the bottom of the kettle is roughly 65mm. A precise figure is not possible, since the ~95mm O.D. sidewall angles down to the flat bottom.
Kettle: The kettle is unused, in the original box. The box arrived here opened, but there are no signs of use. No chips, cracks, stains or wear.
Four-Neck 24/40 top: The female joint height on these four inlets is 23-28mm, depending on which joint and what side of it. The top of a 24/40 male joint fits flush with the kettle joint and this is the standard design on Pyrex 6947 kettles.
As for the condition, there is a very small, flat chip and several "flea bites" on the inner rim of the ground glass. This may be from manufacture. First, because there are no chips on the outer rim, where one would expect the interaction with the clamp to be. Second, because the ground glass on the inner rim does not have a smooth, bowed edge, the way the outer rim, or even a common ST joint does, at it's end. In contrast, the ground glass on the inner rim of the kettle top ends right where the sidewall begins. So, there is a straight drop, resulting in a 90 degree angle, and in fact a sharp edge, where the ground glass ends. Therefore this inner edge may have be cut or ground, rather than molded, when produced. Either way the top is extremely clean, with no joint chips, no cracks or wear.
One of the joints has a few lines around it's bottom from production. These indention lines are very common with these Corning tops. They are not cracks and have feelable depth to them, unlike cracks. A good analogy to describe them would be light writing in wet cement rather than a crack in the cement.
The top is stamped, 'PYREX MADE IN U.S.A'.
